Here at My Eye Xpert, they take the health of your eyes seriously. Below is a description of optional, but highly recommended tests provided at My Eye Xpert in Gurnee

OCT

Our vision is precious. We only get one pair of eyes a lifetime. There are many silent threats to our vision, many that show no warning signs until the damage has already been done. For an exam that goes beyond just a glasses prescription, our office has invested in an Optical Coherence Tomographer- or an OCT. Like an MRI or cat scan ( minus the radiation) this machine takes a 3 dimensional image of the retina as well as the tissues behind it. This means that diseases and conditions can be detected years before they would have shown up during a regular examination. The condition of the retina can indicate issues in body function as well. Some conditions we have caught in our own office have been retinal tears, retinal detachment, swelling of the optic nerve, kidney failure, glaucoma, hypertensive retinopathy, and diabetic retinopathy. Many of the patients were in their early 20s. Some needed immediate care to resolve their conditions, in one case it prevented a patient from losing their life to kidney failure. The OCT also compares a patient’s retinal anatomy to a database that contains thousands of normal retinas, flagging the Dr. if there are any abnormalities.

MPOD

Our office also has equipment that screens for a patient’s risk of developing macular degeneration. This is called a Macular Pigment Optical Density Test, or MPOD. The test works by measuring the amount of pigment present in a patient’s retina- low pigments increase a patient’s risk of developing macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in America. This debilitating disease breaks down the macula and attacks a person’s central vision, eventually preventing a person’s ability to read, drive, or watch television. Because by the time Macular Degeneration would appear in an OCT scan, the damage would be irreversible.

Patients with low pigments will be prescribed Eyepromise and 3000 mg.s omega 3s daily. Their pigments will then be monitored as needed. Raising these pigment levels has been shown to delay the onset of Macular degeneration by 60%. Other benefits of an Eyepromise regimen include decreased light sensitivity and increased contrast perception. Eyepromise is a patented formula that includes 8 mgs zeaxanthin to 4mgs lutein, the ratio found within the macula itself.

A total health package includes all of this testing for $54.
